Dr. Fernandes’ pathway to plastic surgery began with a fascination with art and science. He received a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Middlebury College, where he spent his days studying physiology in the lab and the human form in the art studio. After graduating, he worked in the biotechnology industry on skin substitutes and performed research at Harvard Medical School. He received his MD degree from Tufts University School of Medicine and completed a general surgery residency at The Massachusetts General Hospital, including a two year research fellowship in plastic surgery. He completed his training in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Lahey Clinic. He is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Dr. Fernandes is an assistant professor of surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine and is the associate program director for the plastic surgery residency.
He has published in the most prestigious medical journals on topics ranging from organ transplantation, skin rejuvenation, breast augmentation, fat grafting, and ear and nose reconstruction. His work won Best Research Paper of 2015 from the field’s top journal, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He has presented his work at numerous local, national and international meetings. His research has produced multiple new technologies which are in development for use in patients.
Dr. Fernandes has traveled to the Ukraine, with a team of plastic surgeons, to provide care for burned children in need. On each trip, he performed dozens of surgeries and laser procedures, reconstructing burn scars and restoring hope for hundreds of patients.
Born and raised in the Boston area, Dr. Fernandes is honored to serve the North Shore and the Greater Boston Communities. He enjoys the art of plastic surgery, getting to know his patients and providing them with the very best, compassionate care. In his free time, you can find him with his wife and two young daughters, skiing and hiking around New England.
